“I Chose Division II”
In 2006, the NCAA Division II Presidents Council initiated a comprehensive national study to discover the answers to the question, “Why did we choose Division II”?
The study revealed that NCAA Division II believes that higher education had lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For that reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience in Division II is on a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting.
Six key attributes of Division II became evident: 1) Learning – multiple opportunities to broaden knowledge and skills; 2) Service – positive societal attitude through contributions to community; 3) Sportsmanship – respect for fairness, courtesy, and ethical conduct toward others; 4) Passion – an enthusiastic dedication, desire and effort; 5) Resourcefulness – a versatile skill set drawn from a broad range of experiences; and 6) Balance – an emphasis on collective knowledge and the integration of skills.
The Division II approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and the development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. It is the balance and integrating of these different areas of learning opportunity that provide thousands of Division II student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead.
Learning, Service, Sportsmanship, Passion, Resourcefulness and Balance. This is why the members of the DII CCA chose Division II:
